Antique Seth Thomas 1-Day Lever Ship’s Bell Brass Marine Wall Clock Repair

Offered for sale is an antique Seth Thomas brass marine or bulkhead-style mechanical clock. Origin: Thomaston, Connecticut, United States. Movement type: One-day lever, time-and-strike movement. Escapement: Balance-wheel type rather than a pendulum. Case: Brass drum-style case with hinged glass bezel and mounting tabs. Dial: Silvered Roman-numeral dial with subsidiary seconds register. Approximate period: Late 19th to early 20th century. The exact catalog model and production year have not been confirmed because the movement was not removed from the case and no internal model number was located. Testing and Diagnostic Results. Both winding arbors were tested using a properly fitting universal clock key. Both arbors wind normally, produce audible ratchet clicks, and hold spring tension. The visible balance or escapement assembly located in the opening above the 12 moves slightly when additional winding tension is applied. The clock was held upright and gently rotated in an attempt to start the balance, but it did not begin sustained oscillation or produce continuous ticking. The clock does not presently run. The minute hand turns easily when advanced clockwise. No bell strike was heard while the hands were advanced during testing. Running duration, timekeeping accuracy, and strike sequence could not be tested. No internal disassembly, cleaning, lubrication, adjustment, or repair was attempted. No oil, penetrating fluid, or spray cleaner was applied to the movement. The exact cause of the non-running and non-striking conditions is unknown. Substantial age-related wear and loss to the original silvered dial finish. Numerous scratches, spots, discoloration, oxidation, and surface marks on the dial. Tarnish, patina, polishing marks, scratches, and general wear on the brass case. Areas of green oxidation or verdigris around portions of the case and hardware. Hands and subsidiary seconds hand are present. Hinged front bezel, latch, and mounting tabs are present. Original rear Seth Thomas paper label remains attached but is heavily worn, stained, cracked, and fragile. The clock measures approximately 6 3/4 inches across the case and approximately 3 1/2 inches deep, based on the photographed measurements. This clock is being offered in non-running condition as a restoration project. It should be considered in need of professional mechanical service or repair.
