Offered for your consideration is this. Seth Thomas “Bugle” Chime Clock No. This model features a distinctive mahogany case around a Seth Thomas chime movement No. It has a five-inch silvered dial with raised bronzed Arabic Numerals. What really makes this clock special is that the five premium “Mayland” chime rods have been tuned to play the Seth Thomas “Bugle” chime melody. This melody is a variation of the ubiquitous Westminster Chime. It was first introduced as the “Seth Thomas Chime” and would later become known as the “Seth Thomas Bugle Chime”. The August 1, 1927 price list indicated that the “Seth Thomas Bugle Chime” was available in the No. 78, 90, and 98 models. For this reason we’re pretty sure that this example was manufactured in 1927. NAWCC Watch & Clock Bulletin October 2010 for more details. In order to view and listen to a demonstration of this clock’s Bugle Chime, along with some static photos. Please watch this YouTube. In order to prepare this clock for a new owner, we completely disassembled the movement for a proper cleaning. The pivots were resurfaced and polished. Significantly worn pivot holes were bushed. The mainsprings were thoroughly cleaned, inspected and found to be in acceptable condition. The springs were lubricated and reinstalled in the No. 124’s “motor” barrels. They’ve been closely monitored for good performance. The movement was reassembled, lubricated and tested for a period of 8 days on a bench stand before being reinstalled in the cleaned, polished and waxed case. From there the entire clock was tested for a full eight days and was found to keep good time for an antique mechanical, spring powered clock. You’ll note in the graph that the Beats Per Hour (BPH) rate did fluctuate slightly during the eight-day test period but that it stayed relatively flat on average. This is a good indication of how steady and accurate the clock’s timekeeping should be once the proper speed is obtained through accurate regulation. It can not match a quartz clock’s accuracy, but with its deadbeat escapement, it does achieve accuracy within a minute or two per week. The Chime and Strike tempos do slow down slightly towards the end of the week, but the springs have an adequate amount power in reserve. Should the chimes get out of sequence, the No. 124’s auto-correction has been tested and will automatically correct for any errors at the top of the hour. The new owner will need to make slight, accurate adjustments once the clock has been set up in its new home. Instructions will be provided. We believe that this clock is all original with the exception of a properly sized double-ended replacement “trade” key that we’ve provided. Note that there has been some type of slight damage to the silvered dial face. The dial has been gently cleaned and waxed to help stabilize it. The damaged area does not stand out, especially with the bezel closed. We think that the clock and dial look wonderful as they are, but i. Please let us know if you have any questions.
