RARE EARLYEST, SETH THOMAS #2 OFFICE CALENDAR CLOCK / COUMPOND WEIGHT ca. 1861
The first Seth Thomas Double Dial calendar clocks had a Label Noting. Patents granted to Huntington & Platts 1854, 1857, 1860. Later 1862 was added and the note of Huntington & Platts was dropped. 1860 is when S. Started producing calendar clocks. The rosewood Guilt cap style was the first with the large #1 & #2 Office Calendars and others after. The #1 Office was always a compound weight driven clock. The #2 Office had only the first model being a compound weight driven clock. Where the weight hangs on a pulley not just a hook, and are rarely seen. On these the weight stops on same floor where the Calendar movements sits. The other #2 Office calendars which 99% of the time seen. The weight is not hanging on a pulley and stops below the calendar movement at the base of the clock. The Clock is Large at 42 1/2″ tall 20″ wide and 7 deep. Both upper and lower dials are 14 dia. They are both original Seth Thomas #2 office dials, but the lower Calendar shows a hard to see hint of a patent date of 1862. It should show just the three dates up too 1860. Which means it came from a donor clock from around, but after, the same time. If you decide to have the dials repainted then have the three proper dates added. It has the proper original hands. The door glasses looks like both original wavy glass. They have both been removed and re installed. The cause I’m sure is the rosewood veneer has been removed from the glass bezels. I can only guess it was because the veneer was badly damaged and not replaced. The Movements were as dry as dirt when I got this. The upper time I had ultra sonic cleaned and oiled. It was repaired and is working as it should. The splits it the day roll paper can be seen in the pics. They can be all covered if you wish to replace the outer paper. The calendar dial covers most of it. The door lock works and has its key. The movement wind key works, but isn’t the best fit. It gauges to be a #4, which I have 2 of. Both do not fit that good but sending the best one. The pendulum Bob is the correct large size one that I have seen. The weight is a replacement that for now works. It is just over 5 Lbs. This is only the third one of the Compound weight #2s that I have seen. Only one have I seen the weight a few years ago and It looked taller. I would think it would take a heaver weight with the compound set up. Small repair of some kind on top near weight pully side of the case. Bit of separation on bottom L.
