Antique Seth Thomas “Bay State” Adamantine Mantel Clock – Running, with Original Keys. Offered here is a genuine antique Seth Thomas mantel clock in their “Bay State” Adamantine case style – confirmed by the original stenciled model name still visible on the case back, along with the factory label. This is a handsome four-column Victorian-era shelf clock and a great piece for a collector or someone furnishing a period home. Model: “Bay State” – Adamantine line (case-back stencil confirms model name). Case: Black Adamantine (celluloid veneer over wood) finish with faux marble/tortoiseshell mottled panels on the plinths and crown. Two pairs of full round Corinthian columns with copper-toned cast metal capitals and bases. Cast bronze griffin/mask side ornaments with ring pulls (decorative “lifting handle” motif). Ornate gilt brass fretwork bezel surrounding a porcelain numeral dial, signed Seth Thomas Clock Co. Cast metal scroll feet. Original case-back label reads “Adamantine Clock, Patented September 7, 1880, ” Label No. Includes the original pendulum bob and both period brass winding keys. Age: Seth Thomas’s Adamantine line ran from the early 1880s through roughly 1910s; based on the case style and movement type, this example most likely dates to the 1880s-1900s. Condition: Clock does run, but needs a cleaning in order to keep time and strikes correctly. As with virtually all century-plus-old clocks, it has not been serviced recently and would benefit from a professional cleaning/oiling by a clock repair specialis. Please see photos for cosmetic condition, including some expected age-related wear/chipping to the Adamantine veneer at the top corners and minor wear/tearing to the original paper label on the back.
