Antique Seth Thomas Regulator No. 2 Wall Clock c. 1921
A very nice c. 1921 Seth Thomas Regulator No. The clock is period original with the exception of the weight pulley, weight suspension cable, wall hanger bracket, and nearly all wood screws (with the exception of the movement mounting bracket screws and screws securing the various layers of the wood bezel together), all of which were replaced with new parts. All of the wood screws replaced were retrofitted with solid brass screws, the visible ones fitted with slotted heads in keeping with period screw types. Some of the replacement screws were lengthened for a more secure fit, but sizes were strictly maintained. The entire cabinet is period original with the exception of the base pediment and bow tie veneers, which were replaced when the cabinet was painstakingly restored. The dial is period original and is in excellent antique condition, with beautiful finely delineated crazing (not visible in my images). It should be noted that this arabic numeral dial with the staggered/offset 10 and 11 and gothic ST font is one of the rarest (if not the rarest) for this series clock, and arguably the most sought-after… All three hands appear to be originals and were not restored despite some minor corrosion. Both glass panels appear to be period originals based upon surface wave, minor scratches, and sub-surface defects… The movement is an authentic 77B with lantern pinions, is in excellent running condition, and is an excellent time keeper. My images for the left side of the clock are fragmented because that side is facing a corner, and the clock is very heavy to move, so I have segmented images of that side. Buyers considering this very popular model should note that most “antique” pieces usually have only original movements, with some or all of the rest of their major components cabinets, weights, pendulums and etc. Being 1976 re-issue or later reproductions (which are still being made). Some don’t even have authentic antique movements. So, the market for genuine/authentic antique pieces is littered with modern repros being misrepresented as antiques, including clocks offered by so-called reputable dealers… The 76 re-issue and proliferation of later reproductions have turned the population of authentic/genuine antique pieces into a clock junkyard heavily polluted with crapped-together half-tiques… Also, there is a Seth Thomas No. 2 Regulator Identification Guide chart available on a few antique clock websites that is a reasonably accurate tool for dating these clocks, and is a good tool from which to start evaluating authenticity… The item “Antique Seth Thomas Regulator No. 2 Wall Clock c. 1921″ is in sale since Wednesday, December 16, 2020.
