For your consideration is a handsome Victorian era black adamantine 8 day mantel or or shelf clock by Seth Thomas. Dating to the turn of the 20th century, this ornamental and highly decorative clock is known as the “Shasta” model. Decorated and flanked with marbleized trim that holds a matching celluloid drum and two Grecian celluloid columns with gilded pediments on each side, the clock stands on ornate scrolled and gilded feet. The beaded polished brass bezel operates as intended, secures tightly, and holds a clear crystal that is largely scratch free and in excellent condition. The paper face of the clock shows faint light staining and mild discoloration to one side and displays crisp and legible black Roman numerals on a contrasting white ground. The black scrolled hands are excellent and tight with no bends and are augmented with a gilt foliate cartouche that is set behind. The wooden cabinet with its scalloped serpentine top and black adamantine finish is in beautiful condition, holding a dark and reflective sheen, showing a couple of small corner bumps and losses as well as slight fading to the top, though there is nothing immediately noticeable or distracting that detracts from the clocks beauty or appearance. The mechanics were recently serviced, are clean, operate as intended, and keep reasonably accurate time. The clock chimes on the hour with a bell on the half hour. Included is what appears to be the original pendulum and a newer key that works appropriately and serves as a replacement to the lost original. Truly a stunning and desirable timepiece in beautiful antique condition with wear commensurate for age and a history of gentle well cared for use. A very cute little brass carriage clock. Marked Seth Thomas on the face. Back of movement says German Manufactured, so I do not know if it is original. Has some wear and plating loss. One side window is a bit loose. Clock ran for the past hour. Does have a few small issues. The alarm does not shut off. The knob for the alarm is stripped, and the knob for the time set does not look to be original. There is no key. Stands about 6″ tall and is about 5 by 4″ at the base.
