Update #1: Someone reached out and suggested that the second hand is also clipped and shorter than original. I don’t know enough to say for sure, but I’m happy to report this as another potential issue in addition to the condition issues below. Condition notes: decent shape, but parts only. The sun-numbers in red are often much more faded. The colors are good. The second hand isn’t firmly attached to center dial. The screw down doesn’t appear original – it’s brown instead of a matching black. One screw (of 3) missing from metal ring holding dial in case. Seth Thomas World War 2 us army air Corps operations room sector clock, color coded dial was used for tracking enemy air craft on bombing missions, field locations would transmit back info when aircraft would fly over head, the operations room would map the progress of the aircraft with these clocks and color zones. It measures 10 1/4 dia. At front bezel, dial is 8 1/2 dia.

Navy, by a mass. Here I have a circa WW l Time Sector clock, The F. Whilton model , dial signed Francis J. Whilton / Brookline Mass. And by Seth Thomas Clock Co. Brass tag identifies F. Whilton Model / Time Sector Clock / U. Navy Bureau of Ordnance / Mark l No. 54 / Inspected JBS 1919 / Made by Seth Thomas Clock Co. I believe case is cast iron with hinged swing out cast brass bezel… Silvered brass dial measures 10″ diameter with 12″ bezel. Sweep second hand is started by depressing left outside push button, and stopped by depressing right button, which has a swing lever which is moved out of the way during operations. Similar to a conventional stopwatch or chronograph. I found on Ancestry a Brookline city directory listing Francis Whilton as a watchmaker in 1919 – I assume he was awarded the Navy contract to modify Seth Thomas clocks for wartime need of a large wall mounted timing clock for specific operations…. I have found no other examples in my search for similar timepieces… Nice early clock of good size, quite heavy at 17 pounds! Seth Thomas movement in brass. (only a few hundred were made). Minor superficial scratches barely visibles in front acrylic. It is in working, running condition but need clean service. Back shows GE logo, and a stamped serial number in white. Very good condition, no cracks in bakelite, no key. Original cardboard dial slight wear and tear visible on photos. 26 x 8.5 cms. Army Air Force Sector Clocks The USAAF IXth Air Force operated jointly with the RAF´s 2nd Tactical Air Force in the Allied Expeditionary force from D-Day onwards, and they too used the sector method of plotting aircraft movements. They are smaller than the RAF examples, just 10 inches in diameter and 3 inches deep, with Bakelite cases. The hinges bezel has a milled Bakelite knob to the right side that screws down into a slot in the flange of the lower case. THE USE OF THE CLOCK The USAAF sector clocks were used in tracking the movements of enemy aircraft form the information gathered from observers in the field and from mobile radars. The clock looks very different from the RAF examples but it has the same sequence of colours (red, yellow, blue) and is used in the 5-minute segments for each quarter of an hour. The Allied expeditionary Air Force was a vital supporting mobile unit operating from close behind the front line as it moved across Europe. Its HQ´s operated from tents and the clocks were transported in oak boxes. Because these sector clocks were based on the U. Navy bulkhead clock they were moderately waterproof, which was essential in a tent-bound existence in the field in a European winter!
