This is one of Seth Thomas’s Sonora chime clocks with the adamantine case, and 8 day movement. Cosmetically it’s very good with a some blackened corner dings and maybe a scuff or two, but nothing to point out specifically. Mechanically the clock is mostly untested. Both movements were wound and it was allowed to run while it was being listed. It chimes when the hands were cycled. This is a rare clock and not a run of the mill Sonora. It’s priced to sell so don’t miss it!

Clock actually runs, i’m just not sure if it runs correctly. Pendulum swing stops eventually and not sure how to make the time right. But it does run and keeps a steady tick at the right angle when it’s properly positioned. Missing the suspension spring and leader, that’s why the pendulum stops swinging on it’s own.

A classic Seth Thomas Adamantine mantel clock in the popular temple-style case with green faux-marble (adamantine celluloid) finish and paired cream-colored marble columns – one of the most iconic American shelf clock designs of the late Victorian and Edwardian era, made at the Seth Thomas factory in Thomaston, Connecticut (established 1813). Brand: Seth Thomas – dial reads Made by Seth Thomas in U. Adamantine celluloid finish in deep green with white veining over wood case. Six decorative cream marble-finish columns flanking the dial. Ornate brass feet with scroll detail, brass dial surround with egg-and-dart bezel. Original paper dial with Arabic numerals. 8-day brass spring-driven movement with bell strike, pendulum and coiled gong present. Original paper directions label still adhered to rear of case (torn but legible). Part label number visible: 295-C M. The case shows expected age and honest wear: the adamantine finish has surface crazing, chips, and losses consistent with 120+ years of display; the rear of the case is dusty and has some white residue. The movement is present and appears intact with all visible gears, the bell, pendulum bob, and coil spring, but has not been tested and should be serviced by a clockmaker before use. Overall a handsome, displayable example of a sought-after American antique clock.

Offered here is a genuine antique Seth Thomas mantel clock in their “Bay State” Adamantine case style – confirmed by the original stenciled model name still visible on the case back, along with the factory label. This is a handsome four-column Victorian-era shelf clock and a great piece for a collector or someone furnishing a period home. Model: “Bay State” – Adamantine line (case-back stencil confirms model name). Case: Black Adamantine (celluloid veneer over wood) finish with faux marble/tortoiseshell mottled panels on the plinths and crown. Two pairs of full round Corinthian columns with copper-toned cast metal capitals and bases. Cast bronze griffin/mask side ornaments with ring pulls (decorative “lifting handle” motif). Ornate gilt brass fretwork bezel surrounding a porcelain numeral dial, signed Seth Thomas Clock Co. Cast metal scroll feet. Original case-back label reads “Adamantine Clock, Patented September 7, 1880, ” Label No. Includes the original pendulum bob and both period brass winding keys. Age: Seth Thomas’s Adamantine line ran from the early 1880s through roughly 1910s; based on the case style and movement type, this example most likely dates to the 1880s-1900s. Condition: Clock does run, but needs a cleaning in order to keep time and strikes correctly. As with virtually all century-plus-old clocks, it has not been serviced recently and would benefit from a professional cleaning/oiling by a clock repair specialis. Please see photos for cosmetic condition, including some expected age-related wear/chipping to the Adamantine veneer at the top corners and minor wear/tearing to the original paper label on the back. Offered here is an antique Seth Thomas mantel (shelf) clock featuring a classic architectural case with an octagonal bezel and a decorative lower glass panel depicting a bird motif. The interior retains its original Seth Thomas label reading “Seth Thomas, Thomaston, Connecticut, Warranted Good, ” along with period instructions, adding to its authenticity and appeal. This is a key-wind mechanical movement example, accompanied by its pendulum, winding key, and suspension components as shown. The painted dial with Roman numerals has a nicely aged appearance, and the case shows honest wear consistent with age, giving it a strong early American character. This clock is being offered as a restoration or display piece. The case has looseness at the joints and visible separation at the base corners. The steel suspension spring/leader that the pendulum hangs from will need to be replaced. Due to these issues, the clock is not currently in running condition and has not been tested for timekeeping accuracy. The dial shows areas of paint loss and flaking. The lower glass with bird decoration shows wear and partial loss to the surrounding decoration. The wood case exhibits surface wear, finish loss, scratches, and age-related patina throughout. The back panel and interior show dust and age as expected. Despite the condition issues, this is a desirable Seth Thomas example with good bones, original components present, and strong potential for restoration or parts use.
