These clocks are highly sought after due to the external bell. The clocks strike the 8 bells system notating the various four hour watches. This particular bell is loud and clear! Clock comes with original key and the striking is working but the clock will run and then stop. Glass is in perfect shape no chips or scratches and the door closes firmly. Offered is a late 19th c. The clock was originally nickle-plated, but typical of one of these century-old clocks, the nickle had worn off considerably and with just a quick cleaning on a buffing wheel, the underlying solid brass case and bell polished up to a beautiful luster. Now, for those who bemoan the removing of “patina”, let me remind you that brass on ships was either kept polished or painted and never allowed to look “grungy”! At the same time, I adjusted the two “hammers” to produce a nice resonating ring with no “double-strike”. There were no jeweler markings to indicate any work done in the past, so I cannot say that it won’t need a professional cleaning of the works in the future. The only real sign of age is some wear to the silver plating of the dial around the perimeter, and I did not polish the hammers inside the bell, as they are not seen.
