MARK I – DECK CLOCK. MADE BY SETH THOMAS IN U. ST / MADE IN U. The 5184 marking identifies the Seth Thomas movement type. The 10-42 marking is believed to indicate October 1942, likely related to the movement production or period service/replacement history. The clock is fully working and tested. The mechanical movement runs confidently and consistently, and the time-setting and winding functions operate properly. A correct-size brass winding key is included. Clock / front case diameter: 7.25 inches. Rear mounting housing diameter: approximately 8 inches. Navy Mark I Deck Clock. Seth Thomas, Made in U. Navy number N 4654. Seth Thomas movement No. Heavy brass front case/bezel. Original rear mounting housing. Brass winding key included. Fully working and tested. The clock shows authentic age-related patina, scratches, discoloration, surface wear, and other signs of use consistent with its age. The brass retains its vintage appearance and has not been aggressively polished. The glass, dial, case, and mounting housing show normal wear from age and use. Please review all photos carefully for exact cosmetic condition. This is an impressive and collectible World War II-era U. Authentic 1939 Seth Thomas Mark I U. Navy deck clock, number N 1755, housed in its substantial original heavy watertight porthole-style case. A previous owner removed the original mechanical movement and converted the clock to a modern battery-operated quartz movement for convenient everyday use. The quartz mechanism uses one AA battery. The original mechanical movement and related parts shown in the photographs are included with the clock. Their completeness, operating condition, and suitability for restoration are unknown, so they are included as-is. The original black dial is marked Mark I – Deck Clock – U. Navy, ” dated 1939, and signed “Made by Seth Thomas in U. Because of the quartz conversion, the clock is no longer mechanically original, and the original subsidiary seconds display does not operate in its original manner. The clock retains its exceptionally heavy metal shipboard case with hinged front bezel, glass, mounting flange, rear housing, and aged gasket material. The case was designed for secure bulkhead mounting and has considerable weight. Vintage condition with scratches, scuffs, spotting, discoloration, finish wear, paint or residue, gasket deterioration, dust, and other signs of age, previous installation, and modification. Deck clock in good condition. My dad believed this was off the USS Flasher. Upon removing the movement, the serial number is off by 1 digit from the one written on the tag. The number could have been misread, and this is the clock from the crew’s quarters but there is no way to be sure. My Dad passed last year and no doubt new of the discrepancy on the inventory tag and believed this to be off that sub. Either way it’s a beautiful piece of history.

Despite not having a key and being untested, this clock would make a unique and historically significant addition to any collection of maritime antiques. Small hand tip is broken off. Hands do move freely but untested other than that.
