Offered here is a genuine antique Seth Thomas mantel clock in their “Bay State” Adamantine case style – confirmed by the original stenciled model name still visible on the case back, along with the factory label. This is a handsome four-column Victorian-era shelf clock and a great piece for a collector or someone furnishing a period home. Model: “Bay State” – Adamantine line (case-back stencil confirms model name). Case: Black Adamantine (celluloid veneer over wood) finish with faux marble/tortoiseshell mottled panels on the plinths and crown. Two pairs of full round Corinthian columns with copper-toned cast metal capitals and bases. Cast bronze griffin/mask side ornaments with ring pulls (decorative “lifting handle” motif). Ornate gilt brass fretwork bezel surrounding a porcelain numeral dial, signed Seth Thomas Clock Co. Cast metal scroll feet. Original case-back label reads “Adamantine Clock, Patented September 7, 1880, ” Label No. Includes the original pendulum bob and both period brass winding keys. Age: Seth Thomas’s Adamantine line ran from the early 1880s through roughly 1910s; based on the case style and movement type, this example most likely dates to the 1880s-1900s. Condition: Clock does run, but needs a cleaning in order to keep time and strikes correctly. As with virtually all century-plus-old clocks, it has not been serviced recently and would benefit from a professional cleaning/oiling by a clock repair specialis. Offered here is an antique Seth Thomas mantel (shelf) clock featuring a classic architectural case with an octagonal bezel and a decorative lower glass panel depicting a bird motif. The interior retains its original Seth Thomas label reading “Seth Thomas, Thomaston, Connecticut, Warranted Good, ” along with period instructions, adding to its authenticity and appeal. This is a key-wind mechanical movement example, accompanied by its pendulum, winding key, and suspension components as shown. The painted dial with Roman numerals has a nicely aged appearance, and the case shows honest wear consistent with age, giving it a strong early American character. This clock is being offered as a restoration or display piece. The case has looseness at the joints and visible separation at the base corners. The steel suspension spring/leader that the pendulum hangs from will need to be replaced. Offered for sale is an antique Seth Thomas brass marine or bulkhead-style mechanical clock. Origin: Thomaston, Connecticut, United States. Movement type: One-day lever, time-and-strike movement. Escapement: Balance-wheel type rather than a pendulum. Case: Brass drum-style case with hinged glass bezel and mounting tabs. Dial: Silvered Roman-numeral dial with subsidiary seconds register. Approximate period: Late 19th to early 20th century. The exact catalog model and production year have not been confirmed because the movement was not removed from the case and no internal model number was located. Testing and Diagnostic Results. Both winding arbors were tested using a properly fitting universal clock key. Both arbors wind normally, produce audible ratchet clicks, and hold spring tension. The visible balance or escapement assembly located in the opening above the 12 moves slightly when additional winding tension is applied. The clock was held upright and gently rotated in an attempt to start the balance, but it did not begin sustained oscillation or produce continuous ticking. The clock does not presently run. The minute hand turns easily when advanced clockwise. No bell strike was heard while the hands were advanced during testing. Running duration, timekeeping accuracy, and strike sequence could not be tested. No internal disassembly, cleaning, lubrication, adjustment, or repair was attempted. No oil, penetrating fluid, or spray cleaner was applied to the movement. The exact cause of the non-running and non-striking conditions is unknown. Substantial age-related wear and loss to the original silvered dial finish. Numerous scratches, spots, discoloration, oxidation, and surface marks on the dial. Tarnish, patina, polishing marks, scratches, and general wear on the brass case. Areas of green oxidation or verdigris around portions of the case and hardware. Hands and subsidiary seconds hand are present. Hinged front bezel, latch, and mounting tabs are present. Original rear Seth Thomas paper label remains attached but is heavily worn, stained, cracked, and fragile. The clock measures approximately 6 3/4 inches across the case and approximately 3 1/2 inches deep, based on the photographed measurements. This clock is being offered in non-running condition as a restoration project. It should be considered in need of professional mechanical service or repair. No guarantee is made regarding the condition of the internal movement, mainsprings, balance staff, pivots, hairspring, strike mechanism, or other internal components.
